Qualifications

  • Experience with justice-involved populations in correctional or reentry settings

Responsibilities

  • Prepares instruction reflecting learning objectives and develops handouts and classroom materials
  • Facilitates group discussion and reflective writing in a trauma-informed correctional setting
  • Guides students through transition plans, resumes, and interview preparation
  • Maintains attendance, participation, and homework records; submits documentation on time
  • Uses formative assessment to improve learning and teaching
  • Counsels students regarding progress and course completion requirements
  • Maintains a safe learning environment within facility rules and security protocols
  • Coordinates with Instructional Supervisor and partners on scheduling and graduation
  • Supports department and college goals, providing requested data in a timely manner

Job description

Wake Technical Community College seeks a part-time instructor for the Occupational Readiness reentry program. The instructor delivers Human Resource Development curricula to cohorts of incarcerated individuals preparing for release and employment. Curriculum spans self-development, barrier identification, communication, reflective writing, resume building, interviewing, budgeting, housing planning, and job retention.

  • Prepares instruction that reflects appropriate learning objectives and develops handouts and classroom materials as needed
  • Facilitates group discussion, team activities, and reflective writing in a trauma-informed manner appropriate to a correctional setting
  • Guides students through individualized transition plans, resumes, and interview preparation
  • Maintains accurate records of attendance, participation, and homework; submits required documentation on time
  • Uses formative assessment to improve learning and teaching
  • Counsels students regarding progress and course completion requirements
  • Maintains a safe and orderly learning environment within facility rules and security protocols
  • Coordinates with the Instructional Supervisor, facility staff, and reentry partners on cohort scheduling and graduation
  • Supports Department, Division, and College goals, providing requested data in a timely manner
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with and maintain positive working relationships with students, peers, supervisors, and staff
  • Working knowledge of MS Office products
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Wake Tech and NCDAC background clearance
  • Ability to work in a correctional setting and comply with all policies and guidelines of the NC Department Public Safety
  • Self-directed, organized, task-oriented, detail-oriented and flexible
  • Ability to develop original lesson plans and curriculum that incorporate contextualized instruction and real-life/authentic materials
  • Ability to demonstrate a variety of instructional techniques and methods
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree with experience in counseling, social work, or related field
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience working with justice-involved populations in a correctional, reentry, or community setting
  • OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • Experience in workforce development, reentry services, case management, or human services
Preferences:
  • Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Human Services, or related field
  • Familiarity with NCWorks, and North Carolina workforce and reentry resources
  • Lived experience with reentry
  • Experience teaching adult learners or facilitating group instruction
