Wake Technical Community College seeks a part-time instructor to deliver classroom-based Commercial Driver's License (CDL) permit-preparation instruction to incarcerated adult learners inside of various correctional facilities. The instructor prepares students to pass the NC DMV CDL knowledge exams and enter transportation career pathways upon release. Instruction is classroom-based and includes assigned driving simulations (box truck, bus, and 53-foot sleeper) on a simulator. Morning and evening availability required.

- Delivers CDL theory instruction per approved Wake Tech syllabi, covering all NC DMV CDL knowledge exam content areas
- Prepares instruction that reflects appropriate learning objectives and constructs classroom materials that support course goals
- Assigns, supervises, and evaluates CDL simulator exercises
- Instructs and guides the class in an efficient and effective manner within correctional facility rules and security protocols
- Maintains accurate records of student work, attendance, and progress; submits required documentation electronically and on time
- Uses formative assessment and practice testing to improve student exam readiness
- Counsels students regarding progress and course completion requirements
- Maintains a safe and orderly learning environment
- Maintains communication with the Instructional Supervisor and facility education staff
- Supports Department, Division, and College goals, providing requested data in a timely manner
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to operate a driving simulator and maintain electronic records
- Working knowledge of MS Office products
- Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with and maintain positive working relationships with students, peers, supervisors, and staff
- Ability to obtain and maintain Wake Tech and NC Department of Adult Correction (NCDAC) background clearance
- Self-directed, organized, task-oriented, detail-oriented and flexible
- Ability to develop original lesson plans and curriculum that incorporate contextualized instruction and real-life/authentic materials
- Ability to demonstrate a variety of instructional techniques and methods
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Current, valid Class A CDL
- Minimum three (3) years of experience driving a commercial motor vehicle requiring a Class A CDL
- Driving record meeting state and federal regulatory requirements
Preferences:
- Prior instructional or driver-trainer experience
- Hazmat, tanker, and/or doubles-triples endorsements
- Experience teaching adult or justice-involved learners
