Job summary

SYSTEM West Virginia University Health System is seeking a Hospital Coding Supervisor to oversee coding staff and support the management team in day-to-day reimbursement, coding, abstracting and education activities. This role ensures regulatory compliance and serves as a subject-matter expert across departments.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Current HIM/Coding Certification (AHIMA or AAPC) required.
• Five years of medical coding experience required.

Responsibilities

• Supervises coding staff and assists management in day-to-day operations relating to reimbursement, coding, abstracting, productivity, quality and education.
• Maintains coding backlogs, work queues and charge lag at acceptable levels.
• Acts as expert coding resource to coders, providers, revenue cycle and specialty groups.
• Manages personnel processes including interviewing, hiring, coaching and performance evaluations with management.
• Develops and maintains coding policies, procedures and training materials with management.
• Identifies budgetary needs and maintains fiscal stewardship.
• Oversees internal and external audits for compliance with documentation, coding and billing guidelines.
• Analyzes and resolves issues impacting coding and billing with staff.
• Maintains open and ongoing communication.
• Extracts, analyzes and reports data to management.
• Serves as liaison to vendors and tests information systems.
• Assists in staff coding as needed.
