Job summary

Duke Health in Cary, NC seeks an Optician under close supervision to assist patients with selection, ordering and delivery of eyewear and vision aids and provide support related to adjustment, repair and replacement.

Responsibilities include interpreting prescriptions, educating patients on frame styles, performing repairs, and monitoring inventory and pricing. Travel to multiple optical locations may be required; HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality are essential.

Qualifications

• One year of related experience and/or training, or equivalent education.
• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Must hold licensure by the North Carolina State Board of Opticians.
• Strong blend of communication, sales, empathy and customer service.

Responsibilities

• Analyze and interpret prescriptions.
• Educate patients on frame styles, lens designs, materials and coatings.
• Perform major and minor repairs of eyewear when necessary.
• Conduct instruction sessions for handling contacts.
• Maintain, clean, and repair optical equipment as necessary.
• Dispense eyewear to patients, verify fit, order accuracy, and adjust as needed.
• Advise patients on insurance coverage and promotions.
• Complete customer billing/service records.
• Inspect eyewear for ANSI standard compliance.
• Review and develop optical policies and procedures as requested.
• Monitor pricing, renegotiate vendor contacts when appropriate to maximize margins.
• Partner with clinic staff to maintain high patient satisfaction.
• Monitor inventory budget and purchases of optical inventory and supplies.
• Collaborate with leadership and marketing on marketing optical products.
• Balance ledgers and reconcile deposits daily.
• Attend staff meetings to improve skills and service levels.
• Ensure HIPAA privacy and patient confidentiality at all times.
• Interact professionally with staff to foster positive relationships.
• Meet required competencies and complete annual reviews and trainings.
• Assist in scheduling staff and provide input on day-to-day operations.
