Job summary

Grainger’s Technology Group hosts a 10-week, paid Software Engineer Internship in downtown Chicago, offering exposure to Product Engineering, Cybersecurity, ML, UX, and more. Interns are treated as full team members contributing to real customer outcomes while gaining hands-on experience with modern stacks and AI-enabled workflows.

As an intern, you will collaborate across teams, learn agile practices, and present your work to technology leaders at the end of the program.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or related field with expected graduation between December 2027 and June 2028.
• Experience with at least one programming language and the ability to explain how you approach learning new languages, frameworks, or tools.
• Evidence of curiosity and self-directed learning such as internships, class projects, GitHub contributions, hackathons, or open-source work.
• Interest in product-minded engineering: understanding user needs and building practical solutions.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to design, development, testing, and delivery of software supporting Grainger customers and internal operations.
• Collaborate with teams to build features, fix defects, and participate in code reviews with guidance from engineers.
• Adopt modern engineering practices: Agile delivery, version control, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, secure-by-design thinking.
• Work with product managers and stakeholders to understand user needs and business context.
• Explore AI-enabled tools to prototype, learn, debug, or increase delivery speed while validating outputs.
• Communicate progress clearly and document technical work; collaborate to move the team forward.
• Build learning foundations by exploring unfamiliar code, tools, and business contexts with curiosity.
• Present work and learnings to technology leaders at internship end.
