Job summary

Compeer Financial is seeking a senior privacy and data governance lawyer to lead the organization’s legal framework for privacy, data governance, AI governance, and third-party risk management. You will negotiate complex technology and data agreements, advise on cloud, AI, and data processing matters, and guide leadership on risk and compliance across the enterprise.

You will serve as Privacy Officer, oversee privacy operations, and ensure alignment with state and federal privacy laws, including

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school.
• Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. state (MN/WI/IL preferred).
• Expert-level experience in privacy, technology transactions, or information law.
• Experience advising on IP data use and analytics, data security, including e-signatures and records.
• Experience as privacy officer or readiness to serve.
• IAPP certification preferred (CIPP/US, CIPM, CIPT) or equivalent.
• Experience with data breach response and cybersecurity incidents.
• Experience in financial services or another regulated industry preferred.
• Ability to set legal strategy where the law is unsettled.
• Strong negotiation and relationship-building with business leaders.

Responsibilities

• Owns the legal design and standards of the third-party risk management framework.
• Structures, drafts, and negotiates complex technology, data, and services agreements; provides counsel on data processing, AI, privacy.
• Serves as Privacy Officer guiding the privacy program and compliance with privacy laws.
• Oversees privacy operations: notices, data subject requests, and related guidance.
• Owns the legal framework for information governance, data licensing, and AI governance.
• Advises on data ownership, licensing, and AI tools; supports data-driven product initiatives.
• Leads legal responses to data breaches and cybersecurity incidents; coordinates with security teams.
• Monitors regulatory developments and provides leadership with legal opinions.
• Provides cross-departmental legal support as needed.
