Job summary

Actalent is seeking an entry-level Distribution Design Engineer I to support planning, engineering, and designing electric distribution systems for safe and reliable power delivery. You will work on overhead and underground distribution, perform field engineering, and develop documentation under guidance, with strong growth potential within a large utility-focused team.

The role requires CAD experience (AutoCAD, MicroStation), basic engineering knowledge, and willingness to operate in both field

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field preferred.
• Associates degree with 13 years of relevant experience will be considered.
• Experience with electric utilities or utility consulting for design engineering.
• Experience using CAD tools for engineering design (AutoCAD, MicroStation).
• Foundational knowledge of power distribution and delivery principles.
• Ability to work in both field and office/remote settings.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
• Must live within 40 minutes of Hastings, MI.

Responsibilities

• Plan, engineer, and design electric distribution systems for residential and commercial customers.
• Determine need, size, location, and timing of power delivery infrastructure considering constraints.
• Develop work packages for overhead and underground distribution systems.
• Perform field engineering to verify conditions and gather requirements.
• Conduct design calculations using established procedures and codes.
• Use CAD tools to create and update distribution drawings.
• Support post-construction reviews to ensure design meets requirements.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external clients to align on goals.
• Follow codes such as NESC where applicable.
• Assist with distribution design tasks involving voltage, transformers, and equipment.
• Communicate technical analyses and design processes clearly to team and clients.
• Escalate complex issues to experienced engineers as needed.
• Support administrative tasks and project documentation.
