Job summary

Jacobs in California is seeking a Mid-Level Building Mechanical Engineer to join our Infrastructure Design team. You will design building systems for HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and central plant projects, collaborating with engineers and designers on water and wastewater infrastructure.

The role requires a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, 5+ years of building mechanical experience, and a Professional Engineer license or the ability to obtain one within a year.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, or related engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of progressive building mechanical engineering and project delivery experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, or ability to obtain one within one year.
  • Motivation, strong data analysis skills, technical problem-solving ability, organizational skills, and multitasking in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Responsibilities

  • Design complete HVAC systems, including package type and central plants, following building codes and standards (ASHRAE, NFPA, SMACNA, IBC, IECC).
  • Design HVAC control systems with SCADA and building management system integration.
  • Design plumbing systems including potable/distribution, drainage, and misc systems such as compressed air and natural gas.
  • Design fire protection systems using a performance-based approach.
  • Perform HVAC load calculations, duct/pipe sizing, lifecycle costs, and energy analyses (RESCHECK/COMCHECK).
  • Prepare calculations for plumbing systems (water and drainage flows, heater sizing, pump sizing).
  • Prepare detailed design drawings, specifications, basis of design reports and memos; vendor coordination.
  • Conduct field evaluations and develop as-built drawings.
  • Manage and coordinate with architects, engineers, and technicians; mentor junior engineers.
  • Lead meetings with clients, vendors, and stakeholders to define needs and discuss design issues.
  • Manage project budgets and schedules; support field staff during construction.
