Job summary

Cherokee Mental Health Institute seeks a Maintenance Repairer to join the HVAC/Plumbing shop in Cherokee, IA. The role is full-time with a Monday–Friday schedule from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. You will install, maintain and repair plumbing fixtures and related systems across the facility and occasionally support HVAC work.

The position involves completing daily work orders, background checks, and collaborating with staff to ensure reliable facility operations and patient care environments.

Qualifications

• Three years of full-time work experience in two or more of the recognized building and mechanical trades (carpentry, electrical, heating and air conditioning, machinist, machine repair, masonry, painting, pipefitting, plumbing, refrigeration, and welding).
• Three years of a combination of experience and education, where thirty semester hours of post high school education in an accredited building or mechanical vocational program equals one year of experience.
• Current and continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes two years of full-time work as a Trades Helper.

Responsibilities

• Installs, maintains and repairs fixtures including sinks, toilets, urinals, bathtubs, shower units, automatic flush valves, faucets and traps; sewer and water lines; and other related equipment.
• Performs plumbing repairs, replacement of pipefittings and pipe insulation throughout the hospital.
• Backs up HVAC Technician by installing, maintaining and repairing air conditioning units, commercial refrigeration units, freezers, ice machines, and changing HVAC unit filters monthly.
