Job description

Job Summary

Shabby Fabrics is seeking a personable, organized, and highly adaptable Human Resources Assistant to support our growing team. This role will work closely with the Human Resources Manager, with a strong initial focus on recruiting, candidate screening, interviewing, onboarding, and employee support.

A significant part of the position will be helping us find and recruit outstanding candidates. This includes reviewing resumes and cover letters, researching candidate backgrounds, reaching out through professional emails and phone calls, conducting phone and video screenings, participating in interviews, and helping determine which candidates should move forward for additional interviews or upper management consideration.

This is also a hands-on, hybrid role. HR will be the primary department, but when HR priorities allow, this person will be expected to pivot and support other areas of Shabby Fabrics as needed. That may include order filling, cutting orders, quick fills, returning fabric bolts, or helping another team during call-outs, vacations, or increased workload. We are looking for someone who is flexible, quick on their feet, a fast learner, and ready to jump in wherever help is needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Human Resources Manager with recruiting, onboarding, employee engagement, HR administration, and other priorities.
  • Research and identify qualified candidates, including individuals who may not have actively applied but whose experience fits our needs.
  • Review resumes, cover letters, applications, and candidate backgrounds to identify strengths, concerns, and potential red flags.
  • Write professional recruiting emails and candidate communications and confidently connect with candidates by phone, video, and in person.
  • Conduct initial screenings and assist with first- and second-round interviews; document feedback and help determine who should advance in the hiring process.
  • Coordinate interviews, follow-up communication, onboarding, and accurate confidential HR records.
  • Assist with employee recognition and engagement activities such as birthdays, anniversaries, and company events.
  • When HR workload allows, pivot to hands-on support in other departments, including order filling, cutting orders, quick fills, returning fabric bolts, or other operational needs.
  • Shift priorities quickly as HR and company needs change and approach all assignments with a team-first attitude.
Required Skills and Abilities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including professional email, phone, video, and face-to-face communication.
  • Good judgment and interviewing skills, with the ability to assess candidate fit and recognize potential concerns.
  • Strong organization, attention to detail, research skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Highly flexible, adaptable, and comfortable moving between HR work and hands-on operational support.
  • Fast learner with a strong work ethic, team-first attitude, and willingness to help wherever needed.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
  • Comfortable working both at a desk and on your feet during the workday.
Education and Experience
  • Previous administrative, recruiting, Human Resources, customer-facing, or related professional experience preferred.
  • Previous experience reviewing applicants, interviewing, recruiting, or evaluating candidates preferred.
  • Associate's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Communications, or a related field preferred but not required
Perks & Benefits
  • 401(k) with generous company match
