Job summary

The YWCA Charleston is seeking a Housing Specialist to guide eligible participants into rapid rehousing and transition-in-place programs, conduct housing searches, and provide supportive services to promote self-sufficiency and housing permanency.

Requires a two-year degree in human services (Bachelor’s preferred), strong communication and budgeting skills, and knowledge of Housing First principles. A valid driver’s license and ability to manage a demanding workload are expected.

Qualifications

• Two-year degree in human services or related field.
• Two years of rapid rehousing experience; Bachelor's degree preferred.
• Knowledge of Housing First philosophy and strategies.
• Excellent communication, including listening, mediation, and writing.
• Strong organizational skills and detail-oriented for contract compliance and workload.
• Knowledge of tenant rights and trauma-informed advocacy.
• Record-keeping, budgeting, and reporting to government agencies.
• Understanding of community resources and landlords.
• Cultural competency and ability to empower participants.
• Ability to work collaboratively with other personnel and service providers.
• Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and hold a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Assess housing barriers to determine needs.
• Develop a housing procurement, financial, and self-sufficiency plan.
• Assist participants in locating and securing housing and mediate with landlords.
• Maintain clear communication between tenant, landlord, referrals and agencies.
• Serve as liaison between property managers, participants and neighbors.
• Assist in budgeting and provide budget counseling to establish payment plans.
• Support stabilization goals and progress toward housing permanency.
