Job summary

The City of New York, Department of Homeless Services, seeks a Community Coordinator at AFIC to build relationships across communities and connect clients with housing options beyond shelter. You will conduct outreach, recruit, screen applicants, and gather housing histories to support housing viability.

You will interview tenants, coordinate with landlords and city agencies, verify documents, and provide initial assessments of housing resources.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or related activities; or a high school diploma and six years of related experience; or equivalent combination with at least one year of experience as described.
• Excellent writing, communication, and computer skills are preferred.
• Proficiency with CARES is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Cultivate relationships across diverse communities to provide housing options beyond shelter.
• Conduct outreach, recruitment and screening for housing alternatives with applicants and stakeholders.
• Engage with the community to provide shelter referrals and educate on housing options and resources.
• Gather applicant information, verify documents, and perform screening interviews for single adult applicants.
• Perform fieldwork with tenants, landlords, superintendents, and neighbors; assess housing viability.
