Job summary

The City of New York’s Department of Homeless Services is hiring a Community Coordinator to serve as a Resource Specialist for the Division of Shelter Intake. You will cultivate relationships, conduct outreach, screen housing alternatives, and coordinate with landlords and community partners to secure housing options for single adults and families.

Qualifications include a baccalaureate degree with two years of related experience, or equivalent with seniority; strong writing and communication,

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher plus two years of related community work experience, or an equivalent combination.
• High school diploma plus six years of related experience; at least one year of experience as described in (1).
• Education/experience equivalent to (1) or (2) above with required minimum experience.

Responsibilities

• Cultivate relationships across diverse communities to provide opportunities for clients regarding housing alternatives to shelter.
• Conduct outreach, interviews, recruitment and screening for housing alternatives with primary tenants, landlords and agencies.
• Canvas community and engage with homeless populations to provide shelter referrals and educate about housing options.
• Gather applicant information including housing history and income; review and verify documents; conduct screening interviews.
• Follow-up with past housing resources to determine if applicant can return to the community; make initial recommendations.
• Perform field work including interviews and meetings with tenants, landlords, and neighbors.
• Screen applicants for housing options or resources and provide initial assessment of psychiatric/substance history with BH Specialist as needed.
