Job summary

UMass Memorial Health in Worcester, MA is seeking a Patient Transporter to escort ambulatory patients, transport by wheelchair or bed, and support nursing staff in a hospital setting.

Responsibilities include moving and positioning patients, delivering equipment and specimens, and maintaining infection control standards. This is a non-exempt, on-site role with a 12:30PM–9PM schedule and alternating holidays/weekends, offering a potential signing bonus.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • BLS certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.

Responsibilities

  • Escort ambulatory patients and transport by wheelchair, stretcher or bed.
  • Assist nursing staff with moving and positioning patients using lift devices.
  • Deliver stretchers, beds, cribs and wheelchairs as needed and clean transport equipment biannually.
  • Transport patient specimens and other materials per infection control guidelines.
  • Provide appropriate handoff communication when patients are delivered to the receiving unit.

Responsibilities
  • Escort ambulatory patients. Transport patient by wheelchair, stretcher or bed. Prior to transport, verify identification of all patients assigned by checking two identifiers and signing off on Safe Patient Transport Forms; notify clinician if discrepancy on forms. Ensure patient comfort and safety during transport process, monitor and respond to basic patient needs before, during and after transport. Provide appropriate handoff communication when patient is delivered to receiving unit.
  • Assist nursing staff and/or lift tech in moving and positioning of patients using various lift devices in preparation of patient for transport and returning patient to bed. Include lateral transfer of patients on precaution status that requires Patient Transporter to use personal protection equipment and to follow infection control process per precaution isolation‑type.
  • Deliver stretchers, beds, cribs and wheelchairs as needed. Assist in deep‑cleaning of all transport equipment on a biannual basis. Sanitize transport vehicles and ancillary equipment between patient use.
  • Transport patient specimens to and from the Lab, Pathology, and blood products to/from the Blood Bank in accordance with established infection control guidelines. Transport contaminated equipment to Sterile Processing within same infection control guidelines.
  • Deliver other materials such as medical records, pharmaceuticals, X‑ray films, sterile items, and miscellaneous reports and items as required.
Qualifications

License/Certification/Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience/Skills

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Good interpersonal skills and a customer service orientation to maintain a collaborative, patient focused effort between Patient Transportation and other hospital departments.

Preferred:

  • Six months' experience in a hospital environment.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
