The Commonwealth of Kentucky’s Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is hiring a Highway Technician Assistant I in Letcher County, to support roadway and roadside maintenance in Whitesburg, KY. The role requires operating trucks and maintenance equipment, with emphasis on safety and efficiency.

Applicants must be 18+, hold a valid driver’s license, and be prepared for overtime. Within 12 months, obtain a Class B CDL, plus First Aid, Snow/Ice Training, Traffic Control/Flagger and OSHA 10 certifications

Responsibilities

• Perform brush cutting with chainsaws or axes and apply chemical treatments.
• Flag traffic for maintenance crews to protect workers and the public.
• Snow removal and roadbed maintenance; shovel blacktop as required.
• Maintain roadways and assist with related maintenance tasks.

By joining our District 12, Letcher County Unit as a Highway Technician Assistant I in Letcher County, you’llhave the opportunity to perform general level work and assist with intermediate level work in roadway orroadside maintenance operations.

Summary of Responsibilities

• Operating Equipment: Operate single axle dump trucks to haul materials, snowplows, salt spreaders, and mowing machines efficiently and safely.
• Brush Cutting and Tree Maintenance: Perform brush cutting operations using chain saws, bush axes, orchemical treatments to ensure clear visibility and safety on roadways.
• Traffic Control: Flag traffic for maintenance crews during operations to guarantee the safety of teammembers and the public.
• Snow Removal: Effectively operate snowplows and salt spreaders to clear roadways during winter weather conditions.
• Roadway Repair: Shovel blacktop and perform other roadway maintenance-related activities as required.

Ideal Candidate Experience

• Equipment Operation Experience: Proven experience operating single axle dump trucks, snowplows, saltspreaders, mowing machines, chain saws, and bush axes.
• Traffic Control Knowledge: Understanding of traffic control procedures and ability to flag trafficsafely.
• Physical Fitness: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including shoveling and operating heavymachinery.

Additional position information

• This position requires standing, stooping, bending and lifting 50 pounds.
• Required to work on State Highway with oncoming traffic to perform roadway repairs.
• Required to be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.
• Valid Driver’s License

Within 12 months of employment in this job classification, employees in this classification must furnish the agency's appointing authority with documentation that he or she holds a valid Class B commercial driver's license. Within one year of employment in this job classification, the employee must complete First Aid and Snow and Ice Training and must possess Traffic Control/Flagger and OSHA 10 Certifications or equivalent. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Working Conditions

Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area, and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
