Job summary

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Knott County District 12, is seeking a Highway Technician Assistant I to support roadway and roadside maintenance tasks in Hindman, KY. The role involves operating dump trucks, snowplows and related equipment while prioritizing safety and efficiency.

Ideal candidates will have basic equipment operation experience, a valid driver’s license, and a commitment to safety. The position requires outdoor work in various weather conditions and may include overtime

Qualifications

• High school diploma required.
• Must be 18+ and hold a valid driver’s license.
• Within 12 months must furnish CDL Class B documentation.
• Within one year complete First Aid and Snow & Ice Training and possess Traffic Control/Flagger and OSHA 10 Certifications or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Operate single axle dump trucks and related equipment.
• Perform brush cutting and tree maintenance with suitable tools.
• Flag traffic for maintenance crews to ensure safety.
• Operate snowplows and salt spreaders during winter weather.

By joining our District 12, Knott County Maintenance Garage as a Highway Technician Assistant I in Knott County, you’ll have the opportunity to performs general level work and assist with intermediate level work in roadway or roadside maintenance operations.

Summary of Responsibilities:

• Operating Equipment: Operate single axle dump trucks to haul materials, snowplows, salt spreaders, and mowing machines efficiently and safely.
• Brush Cutting and Tree Maintenance: Perform brush cutting operations using chain saws, bush axes, or chemical treatments to ensure clear visibility and safety on roadways.
• Traffic Control: Flag traffic for maintenance crews during operations to guarantee the safety of team members and the public.
• Snow Removal: Effectively operate snowplows and salt spreaders to clear roadways during winter weather conditions.
• Roadway Repair: Shovel blacktop and perform other roadway maintenance-related activities as required.

Ideal candidate will have experience in:

• Equipment Operation Experience: Proven experience operating single axle dump trucks, snowplows, salt spreaders, mowing machines, chain saws, and bush axes.
• Traffic Control Knowledge: Understanding of traffic control procedures and ability to flag traffic safely.
• Physical Fitness: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including shoveling and operating heavy machinery.
• Safety Conscious: Strong commitment to safety protocols and guidelines.

Additional position information:

• This position requires standing, stooping, bending and lifting 50 pounds.
• Required to work on State Highway with oncoming traffic to perform roadway repairs.
• Required to be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.
• Valid Driver’s License

Within 12 months of employment in this job classification, employees in this classification must furnish the agency's appointing authority with documentation that he or she holds a valid Class B commercial driver's license. Working Conditions

Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area, and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
