Commonwealth of Kentucky in Hindman, KY is seeking a Highway Technician Assistant I to assist with roadway and roadside maintenance. You will operate equipment, control traffic, and perform essential maintenance tasks in all weather conditions.

The role requires physical fitness, safety awareness, and the ability to work extended hours with overtime opportunities. A valid driver's license is required and state CDL training may be provided.

Responsibilities

• Shovel blacktop and assist with roadway maintenance tasks as needed.

By joining our District 12, Knott County Maintenance Garage as a Highway Technician Assistant I in KnottCounty, you will have the opportunity to performs general level work and assist with intermediate level work inroadway or roadside maintenance operations.

Summary of Responsibilities:

• Operating Equipment: Operate single axle dump trucks to haul materials, snowplows, salt spreaders, andmowing machines efficiently and safely.
• Brush Cutting and Tree Maintenance: Perform brush cutting operations using chain saws, bush axes, orchemical treatments to ensure clear visibility and safety on roadways.
• Traffic Control: Flag traffic for maintenance crews during operations to guarantee the safety of teammembers and the public.
• Snow Removal: Effectively operate snowplows and salt spreaders to clear roadways during winter weatherconditions.
• Roadway Repair: Shovel blacktop and perform other roadway maintenance-related activities as required.

Ideal candidate will have experience in:

• Equipment Operation Experience: Proven experience operating single axle dump trucks, snowplows, saltspreaders, mowing machines, chain saws, and bush axes.
• Traffic Control Knowledge: Understanding of traffic control procedures and ability to flag trafficsafely.
• Physical Fitness: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including shoveling and operating heavymachinery.
• Safety Conscious: Strong commitment to safety protocols and guidelines.

Additional position information:

• This position requires standing, stooping, bending and lifting 50 pounds.
• Required to work on State Highway with oncoming traffic to perform roadway repairs.
• Required to be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.
• Valid Driver’s License

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification. Within 12 months of employment in this job classification, employees in this classification must furnish the agency's appointing authority with documentation that he or she holds a valid Class B commercial driver's license. Within one year of employment in this job classification, the employee must complete First Aid and Snow and Ice Training and must possess Traffic Control/Flagger and OSHA 10 Certifications or equivalent. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Working Conditions

Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area, and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
