Job summary

The State of South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks qualified personnel for roadway maintenance duties in a hands-on field role. The position involves operating medium equipment, loading materials, and assisting in trench and pipe projects to maintain and improve road safety and infrastructure.

Ideal candidates have experience with equipment like tandem dump trucks and skid steers, hold a valid driver’s license, and are prepared to obtain a CDL within six months.

Qualifications

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Responsibilities

Operates medium equipment such as tandem dump truck, belt loader, large roller (>4 tons) and skid steer loader for hauling materials.
Assists in operating a backhoe for ditch cleaning and pipe installation; loads maintenance materials as needed.
Operates and maintains electric/gas powered tools and equipment in roadway maintenance tasks.
Assists in setting up and flagging traffic according to MUTCD standards to control traffic and protect workers and the public.
Performs general maintenance, emergency operations, and prepares for on-call duties; lifts up to 50 lbs and works in various weather conditions.
