Job summary

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities seeks a Heavy Duty Mechanic to maintain and repair heavy and light equipment used in road and airport operations across rural Alaska. Training may be provided to obtain a CDL for qualified applicants.

Work involves diagnosing complex mechanical systems, following safety guidelines, and traveling to remote locations as needed to keep Alaska moving and infrastructure running reliably.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance.
• Knowledge of motor vehicle engines, parts, and systems, including their design, uses, repair and maintenance.
• Ability to read and apply OSHA guidelines; read technical manuals, computers and microfiche; select proper tools; maintain and repair shop tools and equipment.

Responsibilities

• Professionally maintain heavy-duty and light-duty equipment and vehicles for road and airport use.
• Diagnose, maintain, repair and modify transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine and emission systems, plus fuel injection, hydraulic, air and electrical systems.
• Work with minimal supervision, demonstrate initiative, and ensure safety and quality in all maintenance tasks.
