Job summary

UNC Health is seeking an Intake Specialist to collect accurate demographic, financial, and medical information from patients at registration, ensuring confidentiality and courteous service. You will serve as the frontline representative for Rex Healthcare.

Key duties include insurance verification, pre-authorization, pre-registration by phone or form, scheduling, and maintaining accurate data for billing and patient safety. This role supports a patient-centered team in North Carolina.

Qualifications

• 2 years of customer service and/or clerical experience.
• Healthcare setting experience preferred with exposure to patient registration or scheduling or insurance authorization processes.
• High school diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.

Responsibilities

• Complete insurance verification and document upfront collections before the date of service for scheduled and pre-registered accounts.
• Complete approval (pre-authorization/prior-approval) for scheduled and pre-registered accounts.
• Complete pre-registration (by phone or by form) for patients as required or requested.
• Schedule all new and follow-up patient appointments; communicate cancellations and attempt to reschedule.
• Maintain inventory of clinical and office supplies; order supplies within budget (Outpatient Rehab only).
• Ensure key ADT information is current for accurate patient safety, charging, billing, and insurance processing.
• Complete and document all governmental, regulatory, financial, and contractual forms per procedure; ensure scanned and legible storage.
• Meet department targets for wait times, upfront collections, deposits, and registration timeliness.
• Provide excellent customer service with a caring, positive, professional disposition.
• Support QA by using system work queues and reducing errors; assist in training new staff.
