Job summary

Save the Children is seeking an Assistant Cook to support meal preparation, serving, and documentation for Head Start and Early Head Start programs. The role includes assisting with inventory, ensuring health and safety standards, and transporting meals to satellite sites, with flexibility for reassignment as needed.

Responsibilities include following USDA/CACFP and Head Start standards, assisting with kitchen operations, and attending nutrition meetings.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent, plus at least two (2) years of related experience.
• Demonstrated experience working in a food service environment.
• Proven teamwork and successful customer service orientation.
• Professional proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Demonstrated organizational skills, self-management of time and overall cleanliness.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate with individuals and teams at all levels, both internal and external.
• Demonstrated ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Must have a valid driver's license.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Preferred: Serv Safe certification; knowledge of CACFP/Head Start standards.

Responsibilities

• Prepares food to meet the needs of children with special needs or dietary restrictions, following Save the Children policies.
• Prepares and serves meals as planned, paying attention to presentation and freshness.
• Assist Head Cook with overseeing kitchen operations and supervising volunteers.
• Maintain inventory for food service operations and assist with deliveries.
• Ensure standardized recipes and CACFP meal requirements are followed.
• Complete daily production records and CACFP documents.
• Attend child nutrition and program meetings.
• Deliver meals to satellite Head Start sites and maintain delivery schedule.
• Ensure health and safety standards during deliveries and in kitchens.
