Job summary

S:US is seeking a Harm Reduction Specialist to engage with program participants around drug and alcohol use, HIV prevention, and self-harm within a harm reduction framework. You will train staff, coordinate services, and provide crisis intervention while maintaining thorough documentation.

The role emphasizes non-judgmental, non-coercive support, advocacy for high-quality care, and collaboration across teams to implement person-centered plans and safety-focused outreach.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or a related human services field or CASAC.
• At least two years of experience working within a harm reduction model.
• Experience working with the homeless population preferred.
• Thorough understanding of harm reduction.
• Must be fingerprinted and cleared by the New York State Justice Center.
• Skilled in articulating program goals.
• Skilled in conflict mediation/negotiation and have an assertive approach to problem solving.
• Ability to transfer knowledge and skills in areas such as, but not limited to: engagement, harm reduction, motivational interviewing, conflict mediation
• Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to work as part of a team.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Computer literate in Microsoft suite, skill sets in Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Responsibilities

• Assess needs of program participants for services and plan accordingly.
• Develop strategies to meet needs of individuals, including outreach and counseling.
• Provide training on harm reduction to staff and participants.
• Coordinate service plans and document interactions with participants and providers.
• Advocate for quality care and assist with conflict resolution.
• Maintain resources and referrals for mental health, substance use, and health problems.
