Job summary

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg, TX is seeking a Groundskeeper I to perform skilled maintenance of grass, plants, and trees and to maintain related equipment. This full-time role requires operating a variety of grounds equipment and may involve evenings, weekends, holidays, or emergencies.

Minimum education is the 6th grade with at least 6 months of plant care experience and ability to read English well enough to follow MSDS and work orders.

Qualifications

  • Completion of the 6th grade. Ability to read and write English well enough to comprehend MSDS on chemicals, and to understand work orders, complete time cards, and receive written and oral directions.
  • Six (6) months of experience in care of plants, trees, and lawns and knowledge of the operation of grounds equipment.
  • Must be authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle and pass MVR checks as per policy.

Responsibilities

  • Care for grass, plants, and trees and maintain equipment used.
  • Mows grass, trims shrubs, sprays plants, waters plants, transplants a wide variety of plants and trees, works in the greenhouse, and maintains grounds.
  • Operates and maintains grounds care equipment.
  • Assists with minor irrigation maintenance repairs as needed.
  • Operates and makes minor repairs on equipment and provides technical assistance within area of responsibility.
  • May be required to have flexible work schedule including evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and campus emergencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Scope of Job

Description of Duties

  • To care for grass, plants, and trees and maintain equipment used.
  • Mows grass, trims shrubs, sprays plants, water plants, transplants a large variety of plants and trees, works in the greenhouse, and maintains grounds.
  • Operates and prepares grounds care equipment.
  • Assists with minor irrigation maintenance repairs as needed.
  • Operates and makes minor repairs on variety of equipment, and provides technical assistance within area of responsibility.
  • May be required to have flexible work schedule, to include but not limited to: work evenings, weekends, Holidays, overtime and any campus emergencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Completion of the 6th grade. Ability to read and write English well enough to comprehend Material Safety Data Sheets ( MSDS ) on chemicals, and other containers, and to understand work orders, complete time cards, and receive oral and written work directions.

As condition of employment this position requires the applicant to be authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle for Official University Business. Per University of Texas System Policy 157, applicants will be subject to a motor vehicle record check for their most recent thirty-six (36) month history. Out of State Drivers are required to submit a 36-month history MVR from their prior State of residence(s).

Skill in the operation and of tractors, cultivators, hedgers, power mowers, trucks and other equipment used in grounds maintenance.

Working Conditions

Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Exposure to weather, hazardous mechanical equipment, and agricultural chemicals. Exposure to outside environments, hot, dry, wet, cold; some work in restricted spaces, exposure to dust and dirt, some duties and working conditions may create bodily strain and discomfort. Outdoor environment; some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

Other

Must be physically able to perform duties described above. May occasionally lift heavy objects weighing up to 100 lbs. with or without assistance. Duties involve the lifting, pushing, and moving of heavy objects; digging, stooping, crawling, climbing, reaching, and other manual activities requiring great physical exertion. Danger of hazards and conditions inherent to the trade or assignment.
