Job summary

Angelo State University is seeking a Grounds Maintenance worker to perform landscaping and grounds maintenance tasks on University properties, including mowing, trimming, pruning, planting, watering, and chemical application. The role requires operating a variety of equipment such as lawn mowers, backhoes, forklifts, and irrigation systems.

Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma and landscaping experience, a valid Texas driver’s license, and the ability to pass physical and background

Qualifications

• High school education plus one year of landscaping, grounds maintenance, or closely related experience.
• Must have a valid Texas driver’s license and driving record acceptable to the University’s insurance.
• Must pass a pre-employment physical.
• Must pass a background check.

Responsibilities

• Operates hand and riding mowers to cut grass on University properties.
• Trims edges around walks, flower beds, walls, trees and shrubs.
• Prunes and trims hedges and trees to shape or remove damaged growth.
• Removes weeds from around shrubs, trees and bedding plants.
• Plants grass, flowers, trees and shrubs using gardening tools.
• Waters lawns, trees, shrubs and flowers using hoses or sprinklers.
• Sprays lawn, shrubs and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides.
• Cleans grounds and removes litter and debris; removes trash from drainage areas.
• Operates backhoe, front end loader, and forklift as needed.
• Maintains and repairs water sprinklers and related irrigation systems.
• Uses high pressure sprayer to clean sidewalks and buildings.
• Sharpens tools for landscaping tasks.
• May paint fences and outbuildings.
• Spreads salt to prevent ice buildup.

Job description

Under general supervision, performs landscaping and grounds maintenance work of routine difficulty.

• Operates hand and riding mowers to cut grass on University properties.
• Trims edges around walks, flower beds, walls, trees, and shrubs using clippers, weed cutters, and edging tools.
• Prunes and trims hedges and trees to shape, improve growth, or remove damaged leaves, branches or twigs, using shears pruners, or chain saw.
• Removes weeds from around shrubs, trees, and bedding plants.
• Plants grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs using gardening tools.
• Waters lawns, trees, shrubs and flowers using hoses or by activating fixed or portable sprinkler systems.
• Sprays lawn, shrubs and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides using hand or automatic sprayer.
• Cleans grounds and removes litter, leaves, and other debris; removes trash from drainage ditches and culverts, using shovel and rake.
• Operates backhoe, front end loader, and forklift as needed.
• Helps maintain and repair water sprinklers.
• Uses high pressure water sprayer to clean sidewalks, porches, and buildings.
• Sharpens tools such as weed cutters, edging tools, and shears using file or knife sharpener.
• May paint fences and outbuildings.
• Spreads salt on public passageways to prevent ice build-up.
• Attends training, seminars, and other meetings as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of the principles and practices of lawn and grounds maintenance;
• Knowledge of the operation of a variety of landscaping and grounds maintenance equipment;
• Knowledge of grounds maintenance and minor repair of applicable tools and equipment;
• Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions necessary in general labor and grounds maintenance;
• Knowledge of applicable University policies and procedures;
• Ability to calculate and/or determine weights, measurements, and quantities;
• Ability to perform general labor and grounds maintenance work in a variety of climatic conditions;
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete work as assigned;
• Ability to read, understand and utilize operation and maintenance manuals, chemical applicator
• instructions, policies, procedures and other related materials;
• Ability to operate with proficiency the tools and equipment related to landscaping and grounds maintenance;
• Skilled in oral communication.
• Skilled in the operation of grounds maintenance tools and equipment.

Physical Requirements

Position requires frequent walking, standing, pushing/pulling, bending and occasional carrying and lifting (up to 80 lbs.) Basic manual dexterity with both hands is required, and both feet are utilized in the operation of equipment and/or vehicles. Incumbent works in and out of doors and has regular exposure to moving machinery, high noise levels, dust, pollen, heat and cold.
