Job summary

SPS Commerce Inc. is seeking a Sr. Manager, Payroll to lead the global payroll function for 2,800+ employees across 40+ states and 10+ countries.

You will set strategy for payroll processes, systems, and policies, and coach a team while managing external vendors. This hybrid Minneapolis-based role may also be remote, with responsibilities spanning compliance, tax filings, audits, and cross-functional collaboration.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, HR, or similar.
• 8+ years of payroll experience including multi-state and international payroll administration.
• 4+ years of people management experience.
• Deep knowledge of payroll regulations, compliance requirements, and industry best practices.
• Ability to lead cross-functional or strategic initiatives using formal project management.
• High ethical standards with confidential and sensitive data.
• Effective communication with executive leadership, external stakeholders, and payroll customers/partners.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Responsibilities

• Set strategic direction for global payroll processes, systems, and policies.
• Ensure compliance with statutory and SOX reporting requirements; maintain current payroll regulations knowledge.
• Own payroll tax filings and reconciliations (federal, state, local) and act as contact for payroll tax audits.
• Lead, coach, and develop a payroll team, building staffing and succession plans.
• Provide strategic direction on complex payroll issues and system upgrades; expand to new jurisdictions.
• Document payroll processes and drive process-improvement or automation initiatives.
• Manage relationships with external payroll providers, including contracts and KPIs.
• Serve as escalation point for complex payroll issues and reconciliations.
• Present payroll function to executives, HR leadership, and external auditors.
• Collaborate with Finance, HR, Legal to align payroll strategy with goals.
