Job summary

Washington State Department of Transportation seeks a Field Exploration Supervisor to lead complex geotechnical field exploration statewide, directing technical crews and ensuring high-quality exploration related to design, construction, maintenance and emergency projects.

You will provide direction to field teams, oversee equipment and resources, monitor safety and documentation, and ensure compliance with project, regulatory, and safety requirements. Hybrid work options are available.

Qualifications

• Supervise and lead employees, including assigning and planning work, providing direction, and evaluating performance.
• Demonstrated ability to manage the operational readiness of a drilling fleet and resolve complex field issues.
• Geotechnical drilling and field exploration experience with multiple crews or teams; knowledge of standards and procedures.
• Strong verbal, written and visual communication to convey policy, standards and technical information.
• Experience managing multiple priorities, maintaining records, and using MS Office to support operations.
• Show commitment to learning, growth, and service to others.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and train multiple crews on assigned projects; develop project duration estimates.
• Work with contractor drilling crews; drill and install groundwater monitoring wells.
• Operate heavy equipment and drilling tooling; manage fleet and field vehicles.
• Review daily crew paperwork for completeness and accuracy.
• Conduct site reviews to determine access, permits, and related needs.
• Determine site exploration strategies and staffing requirements for projects.
• Develop site safety plans for each project.
• Coordinate Ecology compliance reporting requirements and related notices.
• Review field files for accuracy with technicians and close out records.
• Coordinate maintenance and repairs of field equipment and support gear.
