Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking an Assistant Geotechnical Engineer to join our Minneapolis/St Paul team. You will work under a licensed engineer to support design and construction of diverse projects, assisting in field work, data compilation, and geotechnical analysis.

The role emphasizes collaboration, strong communication, and attention to detail, with opportunities to engage in hazard assessments and foundation design across infrastructure and industrial projects.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited bachelor’s degree in civil engineering is preferred.
• Master’s degree in geotechnical or civil engineering with geotechnical emphasis preferred.
• Prior internship or related consulting experience preferred.
• Basic knowledge of standard geotechnical engineering techniques.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
• Proficient computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office).
• Geotechnical software familiarity: Ensoft LPILE, GeoStudio/UTEXAS4, liquefaction analysis, excavation support/wall design.
• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred.
• Minimum 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
• Authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Responsibilities

• Assists with field reconnaissance and geological research to evaluate site-specific conditions.
• Assists with development of work scopes and subcontracts for subsurface investigations.
• Assists with compiling geotechnical data, boring logs and subsurface profiles.
• Assists with field observation of site investigation activities.
• Assists in geotechnical design from conceptual phase through design completion.
• Assists in hazard assessments, foundation design, settlement analysis, slope stability analyses.
• Prepares and reviews engineering calculations, reports, specs, and construction documents.
• Assists with client presentations and contract administration.
• Performs geotechnical construction observation.
• Complies with all policies and standards.
