Job summary

Healthy Start, in partnership with the Allegheny County Health Department’s WIC program, is hiring a full-time Breastfeeding Peer Counselor to support pregnant and breastfeeding participants across Allegheny County.

The role focuses on providing information, encouragement, and referrals, with flexible hours including evenings or weekends as needed. A compassionate, confidential approach is essential.

Qualifications

• Must have breastfed (past or present).
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
• Willing to do occasional evening/weekend shifts and travel within county.

Responsibilities

• Complete breastfeeding training to become a peer counselor.
• Deliver breastfeeding support at WIC clinics and by phone.
• Refer mothers to lactation consultants, nutritionists, or physicians as needed.
• Be available for on-call shifts approximately weekly.
• Maintain confidential records and provide ongoing community education.
