Job summary

Monongalia County Health Department in Morgantown, WV, is seeking a WIC Peer Counselor to provide one-on-one breastfeeding counseling to participants in person, by phone, or virtually.

You will share experiences, help overcome challenges, refer to lactation consultants when needed, and document all interactions while upholding WIC guidelines. Training and meetings are required; light travel to outreach events may occur.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Personal breastfeeding experience (minimum 6 months) preferred.
• WIC or peer counselling experience desirable.
• Completion of WIC Peer Counselor training within 6 months of hire; IBCLC/CLC/CBS preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide one-on-one breastfeeding counseling to WIC participants in person, by phone, or virtually.
• Share personal breastfeeding experiences and offer practical tips to new mothers.
• Assist participants in overcoming common breastfeeding challenges.
• Refer clients to lactation consultants or healthcare providers when needed.
• Document all contacts and counseling sessions accurately.
• Participate in breastfeeding promotion activities and community outreach events.
• Attend required peer counselor training sessions and staff meetings.
• Maintain confidentiality and adhere to WIC program guidelines.
