Job summary

OpenAI is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineer to build and deploy AI systems for legal work. You will embed with senior legal practitioners, identify initial use cases, prototype solutions, and prove measurable value.

Initial engagements focus on workflows where OpenAI models support analysis, drafting, research, or real-time case management. You will own the technical work from discovery to production adoption, turning successful deployments into repeatable patterns for scale across larger

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering, ML engineering, or technical deployment with customer-facing ownership in financial services or similar regulated industries.
• Experience with legal technology, legal services, or compliance-heavy workflows is helpful but not required.
• Owned complex AI/data-driven systems end-to-end, from scoping to production adoption, in high-stakes environments.

Responsibilities

• Embed with law firms and legal teams to understand workflows and identify high-value opportunities.
• Build full-stack systems that deliver customer value and improve learning from deployments.
• Embed closely with customer teams, understand their needs, and guide adoption of what you build.
• Make trade-offs between scope, speed, and quality; adjust plans to protect delivery.
• Contribute directly in the code when needed to progress.
• Codify working patterns into tools, playbooks, or building blocks for others.
• Share field feedback to help Research and Product improve models.
