Job summary

OpenAI’s Forward Deployed Engineering team is hiring a Forward Deployed Engineer to build and deploy AI systems for legal work. You will embed with customers, identify high-value use cases, prototype solutions, and prove measurable value.

You will own the technical work from discovery through production adoption and help scale patterns across large accounts. The role is based in San Francisco or New York City with a hybrid model (three days in the office per week) and relocation assistance.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software engineering, ML engineering, or technical deployment experience with customer-facing ownership in financial services or adjacent regulated industries.
• Experience with legal technology, legal services, compliance-heavy workflows, or professional services is helpful but not required.
• Owned complex AI or data-driven systems end-to-end in environments with high-stakes risk.
• Produced code across backend and frontend using Python, JavaScript, or comparable stacks.
• Deployed systems powered by LLMs or generative models and understood model behavior and guardrails.

Responsibilities

• Embed with law firms and legal teams to understand workflows and identify high-value initial use cases.
• Build full-stack systems delivering customer value and enabling rapid learning.
• Embed with customer teams, understand needs, and drive adoption of what you build.
• Make trade-offs between scope, speed, and quality to protect delivery.
• Contribute directly in the code when needed to progress.
• Codify working patterns into tools, playbooks, or building blocks for others.
