Job summary

OpenAI’s Forward Deployed Engineering team embeds with customers to turn research breakthroughs into production AI systems for legal work. You’ll identify the right use case, rapidly prototype, and prove measurable value, delivering workflows that support legal analysis, drafting, and real-time case handling.

Based in San Francisco or New York City, this role uses a hybrid model with three days in the office per week, relocation assistance, and up to 50% travel.

Qualifications

• Five+ years of software engineering, ML engineering, or technical deployment with customer ownership.
• Experience with legal tech or regulated workflows is helpful but not required.
• End-to-end ownership of AI/data-driven systems in high-stakes environments.
• Proficiency in Python and JavaScript.

Responsibilities

• Embed with law firms and legal teams to identify high-value opportunities and initial use cases.
• Build full-stack systems delivering customer value.
• Guide adoption with customer teams and translate needs into product feedback.
• Make trade-offs between scope, speed, and quality to protect delivery.
• Contribute directly in code when needed.
• Share field feedback to inform Research and Product.
