Class Definition

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To be responsible for the supervision of an assigned food service staff in dining areas or cafeterias providing table, counter, booth or cafeteria line service; and to do related work as required.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of a superior from whom general and specific instructions are received; work is reviewed for conformance to such instructions and for results obtained.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Trains, supervises, instructs and reviews the work of subordinates engaged in performing work in a food service program.


Illustrative Examples of Work Performed

  1. Supervise a food service program in dining areas or cafeterias providing various services.
  2. Train, supervise, and assign work routines to employees.
  3. Oversee personnel engaged in setting tables, serving meals, cleaning, and maintaining equipment.
  4. Inspect food service areas to ensure compliance with sanitary standards.
  5. Assist dietitians or superiors in food preparation and service standards.
  6. Train staff in operation and maintenance of food service equipment.
  7. Apply general and modified diets as established by a dietitian.
  8. Manage food storage, handling, and refrigeration.
  9. Handle food requisitioning and maintain inventory records.
  10. Prepare and submit reports.
  11. Attend departmental meetings as required.
  12. Schedule and assign staff to work areas.
  13. Assist in developing and implementing menu programs.
  14. Perform related work as required.
Required Qualifications for Appointment

Knowledge, Skills, and Capacities: Knowledge of food service methods, health hazards, and safety precautions; ability to assist in food standards application; supervise staff; inspect food areas; prepare reports; interact courteously with the public; and related skills.


Education and Experience: Completion of twelve school grades and experience in a food service program, or equivalent education and experience.


Special Requirements: Must be physically qualified at appointment, as evidenced by a physician's certificate.


Additional Requirements

Proof of immunity against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Hepatitis B, and Tuberculin Skin Test is required prior to employment.
