Job summary

The First Mate at Hornblower Group assists the Captain to safely moor, operate, and maintain company vessels, while helping passengers embark and disembark safely. The role supports vessel operations, including deck crew supervision, routine maintenance, and ongoing safety duties onboard a Coast Guard-inspected passenger vessel.

Employees must be available for nights, weekends and holidays; strong safety focus and teamwork are essential, along with excellent guest service and communication

Qualifications

  • Must hold a Transport Workers Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • CPR/First Aid certification required.
  • Strong focus on safety and teamwork.
  • Excellent customer service, organization and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with guests and crew.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suites.

Responsibilities

  • Stand bridge watch and assist in safe navigating and maneuvering of the vessel.
  • Take command if the captain is incapacitated.
  • Clean and maintain the vessel; supervise routine shipboard maintenance.
  • Assign deck crew tasks and provide direction.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of all common areas on board.
  • Load or unload materials and handle lines to moor the vessel to pier.
  • Operate and maintain ship equipment including engines and generators.
