Job summary

Mat-Su Borough — Finance seeks a property appraisal professional to determine real property values in support of the assessment process. The role is field-facing, documenting improvements and addressing taxpayer questions, with strong customer relations and writing/computer skills essential.

Public-facing responsibilities include interaction with property owners, preparing sketches and photos for the database, and defending values at hearings.

Qualifications

• This role requires strong written communication and customer service skills, and the ability to explain assessment processes clearly.
• Experience with property appraisal concepts such as market values and comparables is preferred.
• Proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Word, Outlook, Excel) and data entry accuracy is strongly desired.

Responsibilities

• Locates, measures, photographs, and inventories residential, commercial, industrial and personal property.
• Interviews property owners to verify interior components and property conditions.
• Reviews accounts for accuracy and inputs new information into the database, including sketches and photographs.
• Communicates with the public by phone, email, and in person to answer questions and explain the assessment process.
• Defends assessed values at quasi-judicial hearings before a panel of board members.
• Reviews and interprets appraisal documents presented in support of assessed values.
• Assists in assessing property affected by disasters as part of Emergency Operation Center activities.
