Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking skilled automotive technicians to diagnose, repair, inspect and maintain a wide range of diesel and gasoline trucks and construction equipment. You will perform repairs on engines, transmissions, electrical systems, HVAC, and braking systems, and complete preventive maintenance per PM schedules.

Qualifications

  • Ability to independently perform major repairs on diesel/gasoline trucks.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports of work and inspections.
  • Obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months and maintain thereafter.
  • Obtain Virginia State Inspection License within 12 months and maintain thereafter.
  • Operate light to heavy-duty trucks safely and efficiently.
  • Perform heavy manual labor as required.
  • Read and comprehend manuals, gauges, and testing devices.
  • Knowledge of welding, fabrication, and diagnostics.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose vehicle or asset failures using testing equipment and manuals.
  • Repair and overhaul engines, transmissions, driveline, electrical and climate systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance per PM schedule.
  • Prepare and close-out work orders; manage parts requests and warranty paperwork.
  • Conduct Virginia State inspections under police guidelines.
  • Design, fabricate, and weld components to repair or replace parts.
