Job summary

Commonwealth of VA Careers is seeking skilled automotive technicians to diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel and gasoline trucks and equipment across varied sites. The role emphasizes safety, documentation, and meeting Virginia inspection standards.

Ideal candidates will have CDL eligibility, ASE certifications, a strong background in cutting/welding, and the ability to perform complex repairs with electronic diagnostic tools.

Qualifications

  • Ability to independently perform major repairs on diesel and gasoline trucks and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports.
  • Obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months and maintain thereafter.
  • Obtain Virginia State Inspection License within 12 months and maintain thereafter.
  • Safety shoes required.
  • Experience using cutting and welding equipment.
  • Proficient with computers and advanced diagnostic software.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose vehicle, equipment or asset failures using testing equipment and manuals; advise outsourcing for major repairs when needed.
  • Prepare equipment for emergency operations and perform on-the-road repairs as necessary.
  • Prepare and process maintenance documentation; generate and close-out work orders in the computer system.
  • Perform repairs and overhauls to vehicles and equipment including engines, transmissions, hydraulics, electrical, and HVAC systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance per PM schedule and address deficiencies; advise outsourcing when needed.
  • Conduct Virginia State inspections under police guidelines for vehicles and equipment.
  • Design, fabricate, modify, and weld components to repair, rebuild, or replace parts.
