Job summary

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is seeking an Automotive Facilities Inspector Trainee to investigate consumer complaints, inspect automotive service providers, and determine compliance with laws and regulations. You will work in one or more counties and support resolution through reporting and potential hearings.

Responsibilities include gathering information, evaluating evidence, examining vehicles and invoices, and mediating between parties.

Qualifications

• Five years of experience as an automotive mechanic, automotive diagnostician, or automotive technician instructor including diagnosis and repair of OBD2 systems.
• Four years of experience as described above (Trainee 2).
• Three years of experience as described above (Trainee 1).
• Candidates may be eligible for 55b/c designation; must meet minimum qualifications.

Responsibilities

• Investigates consumer complaints and seeks timely resolution.
• Obtains information by reviewing files and interviewing complainants.
• Examines vehicles and components to assess work performed and charges.
• Gathers evidence, prepares narrative reports, and may testify at hearings.
• Conducts inspections and program audits of automotive facilities to ensure compliance.
