Job summary

New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is seeking an Automotive Facilities Inspector Trainee 1/2 to investigate consumer complaints and inspect service providers for licensure compliance across a regional area.

You will review complaint files, interview complainants, examine vehicle repairs and invoices, and prepare narrative reports. This role requires field work, driving, and the ability to coordinate with customers and inspectors.

Qualifications

• Five years of automotive mechanic/diagnostician/technician experience with On-Board Diagnostics (OBD2).
• Three to five years of automotive repair experience depending on trainee level (G-14 to G-16).
• Ability to travel extensively and operate a motor vehicle.

Responsibilities

• Investigates consumer complaints by reviewing files, interviewing complainants and gathering third-party information.
• Examines vehicles and components to determine the nature, extent and necessity of work performed; inspects invoices and work orders.
• Prepares narrative case reports and makes recommendations; testifies at administrative hearings when required.
• Acts as mediator between consumers and automotive facilities when no illegality is found.
