Job summary

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles seeks an Automotive Facilities Inspector Trainee to investigate consumer complaints and periodically inspect automotive service providers for licensure compliance. The role involves county-based field work under a Senior Inspector and requires reviewing complaints, gathering evidence, and preparing case reports.

Qualified candidates will participate in inspections, documentation, and possible testimony at hearings.

Qualifications

• Five years of experience as an automotive mechanic, diagnostician, or automotive technician instructor including diagnosis and repair of OBD2 systems.
• Valid New York State driver's license required at appointment and throughout employment.
• NY HELPS eligibility encouraged; transfer/reinstatement options exist for qualified candidates.
• Willing to travel within designated counties; field work and inspections in multiple counties are expected.

Responsibilities

• Investigates and resolves consumer complaints about automotive services.
• Inspects service providers for licensure compliance and quality of work.
• Examines vehicles, components, invoices and related documents to verify repairs meet estimates and regulations.
• Mediates between consumers and facilities when no illegality is found; prepares evidence and reports.
• Testifies at hearings and may serve as an expert witness; conducts program audits and inspections.
