Job summary

New York State Department of Motor Vehicles in New York is seeking an Automotive Facilities Inspector Trainee to investigate consumer complaints involving automotive services and to inspect providers for licensure compliance. The role requires field work across multiple counties within Region 5.

Under the supervision of a Senior Automotive Facilities Inspector, you will gather evidence, review complaints, interview witnesses, examine vehicles and invoices, and prepare findings for hearings.

Qualifications

• 5 years of automotive experience (mechanic/diagnostician/technician instructor) or equivalent as described.
• Willingness to travel within designated NY counties.
• Valid driver’s license in New York State.

Responsibilities

• Investigate consumer complaints and seek resolution.
• Inspect vehicles and components to assess work performed.
• Review invoices and estimates for compliance with written orders.
• Gather evidence and prepare narrative reports of findings.
• Testify at hearings and advise on appropriate restitution.
• Act as mediator between consumers and automotive facilities.
