Job summary

Stantec is seeking on-call archaeologists to support our Southern California Cultural Resources team. The position supports a growing portfolio of fieldwork across multiple southern California offices, including Pasadena, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and more.

Experience in field surveys and DPR forms is valued, with opportunities for mentorship and flexible scheduling. The role is primarily field-based, with potential for occasional office tasks.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Anthropology or Archaeology from an accredited university
• 1-year minimum relevant experience (field school, internship, lab experience, CRM field work)
• Experience working on archaeological crews in California is preferred
• Strong technical writing skills and proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record

Responsibilities

• Assist field directors and project managers with pre-field planning, cultural surveys, shovel test pits (STPs), test excavations, and monitoring of construction activities
• Identify, document, and record precontact and historic-era cultural resources in accordance with state and federal standards
• Complete detailed field documentation, including site records, feature forms, Munsell soil descriptions, sketch maps, and photographic logs
• Employ GIS and GPS/GNSS tools with sub-meter accuracy (ESRI Field Maps, Survey123, ArcGIS Online)
• Conduct desktop research, including DPR 523 forms or equivalent state records
• Support archaeological impact assessments and site significance evaluations under NRHP/CRHR criteria
• Prepare daily logs, monitoring reports, and HSSE documentation
• Follow safety protocols and contribute to a safe, respectful work environment
• Work independently or as part of a team in varied field conditions; provide logistics support in the field
