Job summary

The NYC Health Department is seeking a Custodian to supervise cleaning, operation and maintenance of large city buildings and grounds, ensuring safety standards are met. This is a citywide assignment with work location determined by agency needs.

The role includes supervising custodial staff, overseeing heating systems in facilities, inspecting premises, ordering supplies, and training personnel. Benefits include health insurance, pension, and potential work-from-home options where applicable.

Qualifications

• Two years of full-time satisfactory experience in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings.
• To be assigned to Assignment Level II, candidates must have three years of satisfactory experience as described in the Qualification Requirements above.
• To be assigned to Assignment Level III and IV candidates must have four years of satisfactory experience as described in the Qualification Requirements above.

Responsibilities

• Supervise the cleaning, operation, and maintenance of one or more medium or large-sized buildings and their immediate grounds, including lawns and shrubs.
• Enforce safety requirements and supervise custodial employees on an assigned shift in a large building.
• Oversee the operation of a low pressure heating system in a medium or large building.
• Supervise minor repairs.
• Coordinate and supervise the moving of furniture and equipment.
• Inspect interior and exterior of assigned building daily, including boiler, elevators and related equipment.
