Job summary

New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene seeks a Custodian for citywide facilities management. The role supervises custodial staff, oversees building cleanliness and safety, and coordinates repairs and asset movement.

The position may require serving as Fire Safety Director and managing schedules with a focus on public health facilities. Applicants must meet NYCs experience requirements for Assignment Levels; 55-a Program eligibility is noted.

Qualifications

• Two years of full-time satisfactory experience in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings.
• To be assigned to Assignment Level II, three years of satisfactory experience are required.
• To be assigned to Assignment Level III and IV, four years of satisfactory experience are required.

Responsibilities

• Supervise the cleaning, operation, and maintenance of one or more medium or large-sized buildings and their immediate grounds.
• Enforce safety requirements and supervise custodial employees on an assigned shift.
• Oversee operation of a low pressure heating system in medium/large buildings.
• Supervise minor repairs and coordinate moving of furniture and equipment.
• Serve as Fire Safety Director and address FDNY building violations.
• Train personnel in safe work methods and use of equipment and materials.
• Prepare work schedules and investigate/adjust complaints about service and personnel.
• Perform duties of subordinates as needed and substitute for supervisor during absence.
• Maintain cleanliness and maintenance of large public buildings.
• Inspect interior and exterior of assigned buildings daily (boilers, elevators, etc.).
• Order janitorial supplies.
