Job summary

NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is seeking a Custodian for a citywide assignment. The selected candidate will supervise custodial operations, enforce safety standards, and oversee maintenance in large public buildings, with potential responsibilities across multiple facilities in NYC.

Residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. This position offers benefits typical of NYC civil service jobs and may include work-from-home options per position.

Qualifications

• Two years of full-time satisfactory experience in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings.

Responsibilities

• Supervise the cleaning, operation, and maintenance of one or more medium or large-sized buildings and their immediate grounds, including lawns and shrubs.
• Perform work of moderate difficulty and responsible for the enforcement of safety requirements in such assigned areas; and or supervise custodial employees on an assigned shift in a large building.
• In a medium sized building or in a large building provide, oversee the operation of a low pressure heating system.
• Supervise minor repairs.
• Coordinate and supervise the moving of furniture and equipment.
• Serve as Fire Safety Director and tend to FDNY citations for building violations
• Train personnel in safe work methods and use of equipment and materials.
• Prepare work schedules; investigate and adjust complaints about service and personnel.
• Perform the duties of subordinates, as needed.
