Job summary

VSP Vision is seeking an Optometry Support Specialist to assist the optometrist with eye examinations, pre-testing and patient history intake, and guiding patients through the clinical experience.

The role involves preparing patients, operating instruments, administering tests, instructing on contact lens insertion, managing lens trials, and supporting front-desk tasks to maintain efficient patient flow and high-quality care.

Qualifications

• One to two years of experience in a related field.
• Working knowledge of MS Office package.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal and rapport-building abilities.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Prepare patients before the examination by gathering information about the patient’s vision and medical history, explaining the exam process, and documenting all needed information in the patient’s record
• Able to work well with technology and various clinical instruments, taking measurements, and administering tests to determine the visual capabilities of the patient in preparation for the vision examination
• Perform contact lens insertion; educate and train patients on contact lens insertion and removal
• Order contact lenses of various types of materials and designs and manage contact lens trials inventory
• Administer topical ophthalmic and dilation medications
• Scribe for the doctor and translate as needed
• Prioritize patient care and patient flow while communicating effectively with doctors, staff, and patients
• Perform, under the direction of the Optometrist, some therapy exercises or procedures with the patient
• Assist in other areas of the office as necessary, such as answering phones, verifying insurance, checking in patients, scanning charts, maintaining a clean office, and checking patients in and out
• Work on special projects, cross-train in different departments, and perform other related duties as assigned or requested
