Job summary

Altius Talent | Freight Forwarding Recruitment is seeking an Export Manager in the Queens area to lead the export department, oversee air and ocean shipments, and ensure compliance. You will develop the team, manage customer and carrier relationships, and drive continuous process improvements.

The role requires 5+ years in export with 2+ years in a leadership capacity, strong negotiation skills, and experience with CargoWise or similar systems. AXS/EEI compliance knowledge is essential.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of export experience in freight forwarding.
• 2+ years in a supervisory or management role.
• Familiarity with JFK airport operations and the NY/NJ port complex.
• IATA certification or a customs-related credential is a plus.
• Strong negotiation, communication and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Manage and mentor the export team, setting priorities and ensuring service and accuracy standards.
• Oversee air and ocean export shipments from booking through delivery, including docs, AWB/BL, and tracking.
• Ensure AES/EEI filing, HTS/Schedule B classification, and export control compliance.
• Build and maintain relationships with airlines, carriers, consolidators, truckers, and overseas agents.
• Negotiate rates and service terms with carriers and vendors.
• Partner with sales on pricing, quoting, and new business opportunities.
• Monitor KPIs, shipment exceptions, and costs; report to leadership.
• Resolve escalations quickly and maintain high customer service.
• Drive process improvements and use the CargoWise system effectively.

Company Overview

Altius Talent is partnering with an established international freight forwarder with a strong presence in the New York metro area. Their Queens operation supports a diverse customer base across air and ocean export trade lanes.

Position Overview

The Export Manager leads the export department and is accountable for day-to-day operations, team performance, and compliance. You will oversee air and ocean export workflows, develop your team, and serve as a key point of contact for customers, carriers, and overseas agents.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and mentor the export team, setting priorities and holding the team to service and accuracy standards
• Oversee air and ocean export shipments from booking through delivery, including documentation, AWB and BL issuance, and cargo tracking
• Ensure compliance with AES/EEI filing requirements, HTS/Schedule B classification, and export control regulations
• Build and maintain relationships with airlines, ocean carriers, consolidators, truckers, and overseas agents
• Negotiate rates and service terms with carriers and vendors
• Partner with sales on pricing, quoting, and new business opportunities
• Monitor KPIs, shipment exceptions, and cost control, and report to senior leadership
• Resolve escalations quickly and maintain strong customer service
• Drive process improvements and make effective use of the TMS (CargoWise preferred)

Key Skills & Qualifications

• 5+ years of export experience in freight forwarding, with 2+ years in a supervisory or management role
• Strong knowledge of air and ocean export documentation, Incoterms, and export compliance
• Familiarity with JFK airport operations and the NY/NJ port complex
• Proven ability to lead, coach, and develop a team
• Strong negotiation, communication, and problem-solving skills
• CargoWise or comparable forwarding system experience preferred
• IATA certification or a customs-related credential is a plus
