Job summary

Altius Talent partners with an established international freight forwarder in Jersey City, seeking an Air & Ocean Import Specialist. You will manage inbound shipments across air and ocean lanes, coordinating with overseas agents, carriers, brokers, and truckers to keep cargo moving and customers informed.

The role requires 2+ years of import experience, strong documentation knowledge, and familiarity with the NY/NJ port complex.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of air and ocean import experience at a freight forwarder or NVOCC.
• Working knowledge of import documentation, Incoterms, and customs clearance procedures.
• Familiarity with the NY/NJ port complex, including Port Newark-Elizabeth, and with EWR and JFK airport operations.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple time-sensitive shipments.
• Clear written and verbal communication with customers, agents, and carriers.

Responsibilities

• Process air and ocean import shipments, including FCL and LCL, from booking confirmation through delivery.
• Review and verify import documentation, including AWB, house and master BL, commercial invoices, and packing lists.
• Issue and track pre-alerts and arrival notices, and coordinate with overseas agents.
• Coordinate customs clearance with brokers and confirm ISF filings are completed on time.
• Arrange drayage, airport pick-ups, and final delivery, including appointment scheduling.
• Monitor cargo status, vessel and flight schedules, and terminal or airline availability.
• Track and help minimize demurrage, detention, and storage charges.
• Handle holds, exams, and exceptions, and give proactive updates to customers.
• Prepare freight invoices and maintain accurate records in the TMS (CargoWise preferred).

Position Overview

The Air & Ocean Import Operator manages inbound shipments from origin through final delivery. You will coordinate with overseas agents, carriers, customs brokers, and truckers to keep cargo moving and customers informed.
