Job summary

Brown University Health seeks a Phlebotomy professional to obtain blood and other specimens under supervision at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. The role includes specimen transport, basic clerical work, and data entry, with a Monday–Friday evening shift (2 PM–6 PM) and holiday rotation.

Responsibilities include scheduling punctures, labeling and preparing samples, verifying patient identity, and performing coagulation tests as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Phlebotomy certificate or completion of a program with internship demonstrating 100 successful venipunctures.
• In lieu of internship, 6 months phlebotomy experience may be considered.
• In lieu of phlebotomy certification, 5+ years direct phlebotomy experience may be considered.
• Ability to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, children and infants.
• Interpersonal skills to explain procedures and reassure patients.
• Clerical skills to prepare and maintain records and reports.

Responsibilities

• Schedule venipunctures or capillary punctures according to priority and test type.
• Prepare labels and ensure specimens are collected per procedures and universal precautions.
• Verify patient identity and prepare patient prior to collection.
• Collect blood samples and other specimens; alert staff to deviations or adverse conditions.
• Perform coagulation tests (e.g., bleeding times).
• Label, wrap, and prepare samples for transport; maintain records of procurement.
• Enter patient data into the department system and resolve data/accounting issues.
