Job summary

Brown University Health in Cranston, Rhode Island seeks a phlebotomist to obtain blood and other specimens in accordance with department procedures. The role covers pediatric and adult patients on outpatient units, with sample transport and basic records completion.

Under supervision, you will ensure patient safety, perform registrations, collect tests, and maintain documentation, while embracing patient- and family-centered care aligned with the organization's mission and values.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Phlebotomy certificate through a national certifying body and/or completion of a phlebotomy certification program with internship demonstrating 100 successful venipunctures.
• In lieu of internship, 6 months of phlebotomy experience may be considered.
• In lieu of phlebotomy certification, 5+ years direct phlebotomy experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

• Performs various functions to assure proper collection and documentation of patient specimens.
• Register patients and order tests following policies for patient identification and verification, registration, test orders, medical necessity and document scanning.
• Manage ABN to include diagnostic codes, documentation, and patient signature.
• Perform clerical activities such as medical necessity follow-up, filing, answering phones, and report delivery.
• Maintain standing orders for expiration and renewals; ensure tasks are completed.
• Provide patients with forms and instructions for tests and prepare them for specimen collection.
• Schedule venipunctures or capillary punctures according to priority and test type; use labels and references as needed.
• Verify patient identity and proper preparation prior to venipuncture; alert staff to deviations or adverse conditions.
• Obtain blood samples and process/transport as required; may collect other specimens and perform basic processing.
• Follow universal precautions and hospital policies in all duties.
